About this event

Our housing crisis is creating many victims. The “invisible class,” those individuals and families who are without any housing, undoubtedly have the most urgent needs. Yet as a society we often “walk by” without acknowledging them. If we don’t see past the stereotypes, those experiencing homelessness can become a forgotten part of our community. If we provide shelter but don’t address the systemic causes, the crisis will only grow.

Partnering with ESTHER and Pillars, our November 11 program will focus on those experiencing homelessness in our own community. We will meet individuals who have experienced being homeless. We will learn what Pillars and its component organizations have done and are doing to help people and to manage this community crisis. And we will explore what roles we can play in helping those who find themselves without shelter.

This program will be held at the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes Region office at 4693 N. Lynndale Dr. Appleton, WI and as a virtual event. Registration is required to attend either option.

Before the November program, ESTHER is providing us access to a screening of the film “The Invisible Class” a 90-minute documentary which challenges stereotypes and examines the systemic causes of homelessness. The screening of the film will be held on October 29 at 6:00 p.m. at the ESTHER Center, 116 E. Wisconsin Avenue, Appleton. We also encourage you to read: When We Walk By, Kenneth Adler & Donald Burns, and/or Poverty, By America, by Matthew Desmond for more information and insights. Registration is required and this is a hybrid event. A Zoom link will be sent with registration confirmation. This event will also be recorded and available to view on YouTube.
