Pending Wisconsin Legislation

LWV of Wisconsin’s Legislative Committee typically meets bi-weekly to keep a watchful eye on bills pending in the state legislature. Each piece of legislation is carefully reviewed and committee members vote to approve or oppose the legislation based on League positions.

Currently, the legislature is recessed.

Here is a list of bills the LWVWI supports and opposes and background information on why.

Please contact your elected representatives to voice your opinions.

The Equal Rights Amendment

Women’s Equality Day on August 26 is when we mark the day in 1920 when the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote officially became part of the US Constitution.
Three years later, Alice Paul introduced the Equal Rights Amendment in Congress. It took from 1923 until 1972 for the ERA to pass in Congress. Finally, in 2020 the required 38 states ratified it. However, it has still not been certified as part of the Constitution due to artificial deadlines imposed by Congress.

Those deadlines need to be lifted by the Senate. Please sign the petition to urge our Senators to pass the bill to remove those artificial deadlines to allow the ERA to become the 28th Amendment to the Constitution.

Read facts about the ERA and why it's important. Sign the petition to move the ERA to full ratification here. To find out who your Senators are, click here.

Irene Strohbeen and Midday Women’s Alliance have provided this succinct information on the ERA to use as talking points when you contact your senators.

League of Women Voters Policy on Candidate Forums and Interviews

The goal of the League of Women Voters is to provide information about candidates and their stands on issues through impartial forums and questionnaires. We want voters to be able to make an informed choice when they cast their ballots.

  • All candidates for a contested position are invited.  We sponsor in-person or virtual forums only if candidates from opposing parties agree to participate.
  • We solicit questions from the public, but we reserve the right to screen questions to avoid partisanship, duplication, and personal attacks.
  • If it is not possible to provide a forum, we offer an opportunity to record a virtual interview to individual candidates.
  • We provide written information on candidates on our Vote411.org website. Information is published exactly as it is submitted by the candidates.

To submit a question to candidates, please send them to voterservice@lwvappletonfoxcities.org. Indicate which position your question is for, such as the Appleton Common Council, Outagamie County Board, etc. We are currently working to organize forums and candidate information for Fox Cities area municipal, county, and school district races. Watch for information on this website.
