The Equal Rights Amendment

Women’s Equality Day on August 26 is when we mark the day in 1920 when the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote officially became part of the US Constitution.
Three years later, Alice Paul introduced the Equal Rights Amendment in Congress. It took from 1923 until 1972 for the ERA to pass in Congress. Finally, in 2020 the required 38 states ratified it. However, it has still not been certified as part of the Constitution due to artificial deadlines imposed by Congress.

Those deadlines need to be lifted by the Senate. Please sign the petition to urge our Senators to pass the bill to remove those artificial deadlines to allow the ERA to become the 28th Amendment to the Constitution.

Read facts about the ERA and why it's important. Sign the petition to move the ERA to full ratification here. To find out who your Senators are, click here.

Irene Strohbeen and Midday Women’s Alliance have provided this succinct information on the ERA to use as talking points when you contact your senators.

Silent Auction 2023

You're Invited!

In tune with the League's Holiday Brunch theme, "Freedom to Read," we're hosting a silent auction sure to inspire readers of all levels and interests.

Please consider contributing new books — or a curated basket of books and items to enhance the reading experience.

Choose an outdoor adventure. A mystery. Stories by or about exceptional women. Sports heroes. Jokes. History. An e-book. Pair it with a cozy wrap. A storybook sleepover. A little light to read under the covers. Poetry reading. Local author meet ‘n greet. A cookbook taste test. Some chocolate or wine, perhaps.

These are just a few suggestions. Author your own ideas. Plan now! We’ll happily pick up your basket, or pair your items with others in a basket of our creation. New items only, please.

Let us know if you'd like to contribute items for the auction, or make a cash donation. Please contact Cindy at Watch for auction details soon!

Women's Action Coalition
of the Fox Valley

What better time than Women's Equality Day to launch the Women's Action Coalition of the Fox Valley!

This collective of five women's organizations passionate about women's equality took advantage of the occasion to ask local farm market attendees what equality means to them. More than 70 people shared their thoughts, and received a Polaroid photo of themselves with their handwritten comments.

These insights will be incorporated into an oral history project to be developed by the Coalition.

Check out more about the Coalition here.
