Under Wisconsin law, voters do not need a reason or excuse,
such as being out of town on Election Day, to vote absentee.
Any registered voter who prefers to vote by absentee ballot may request one.

Absentee and Early Voting
Did you know that any registered Wisconsin voter can Vote by Mail? An absentee ballot is not just for people out of town. It's convenient and guarantees you'll "turn out" to vote.
Plan to return your absentee ballot by mail or by delivering it in person to your clerk's office — using a drop box is no longer an option. Voters must return their own absentee ballot. Voters with disabilities may ask for accommodations to return their ballot. If you have questions about these changes, contact your Municipal Clerk.
Options for requesting an absentee ballot:
- Online.

- At your municipal clerk’s office.
- In-person, by email or phone.
- By mail.
- You can download the Application For Absentee Ballot.
- You will also need to provide a copy of your acceptable photo ID with your request. If you have not previously provided a copy of photo ID, it must accompany your first application by mail.

Request an ongoing absentee ballot--either online or with the printed form --if you are indefinitely confined. You do not need to provide a photo ID with this kind of request.
Complete Your Ballot
- Your municipal clerk will send your absentee ballot by mail. You can track the progress of your ballot online here.
- Be sure to carefully follow the directions that come with your ballot. Watch this video on completing an absentee ballot.
- And check Vote411 for information about your candidates’ background and positions before you vote.
- You will need a witness to sign and put their address on the envelope of your ballot attesting to your having filled the ballot out yourself. Again, be sure that you are following directions.

The ballot can be rejected if the envelope is not correctly filled out.
If time is sufficient, your clerk may contact you to remedy any problems with your completion of the envelope holding your ballot. Return your ballot as soon as possible.
Return Your Ballot
